Condensation of carbanions with 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene: a new type of bicyclic anion

Abstract

1,3,5-Trinitrobenzene can react with certain ketonic compounds in the presence of a base to form a new type of bicyclic anion. This reaction has been observed with pentane-2,4-dione, with dibenzyl ketone, and with ethyl acetoacetate. A previously unidentified product from the reaction of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene with acetone in the presence of diethylamine is now identified as such a bicyclic product.
