The nucleus of fumagillin (I; R = CO·[CH![[double bond, length half m-dash]](https://www.rsc.org/images/entities/char_e006.gif)
CH]4·CO2H) is shown by tracer studies to arise by the terpene route. The side-chain is produced from ‘acetate’ without intervention of a symmetrical intermediate.
