Friedel–Crafts reaction of oxalyl chloride with pentamethylbenzene

Abstract

Oxaly chloride reacts with pentamethylbenzene in the presence of aluminium chloride to give pentamethylbenzoic acid (65%), hexamethylbenzene, and 1,1′,2,2′,3,3′,4,4′,5-nonamethylbenzophenone (2%).
