Polarity, polarisability, and association in methyl- and chloro-anilines

Abstract

Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (×1012) are reported for the following as solutes in carbon tetrachloride and benzene: 2,6-dimethylaniline; 3,5-dimethylaniline; 2,6-dichloroaniline; and 3,5-dichloroaniline. The experimental results are used to investigate the polarity and polarisability characteristics of these molecules and, with the aid of 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy, to examine the incidence of intramolecular and intermolecular associations.
