Competitive alkali-metal flame reactions. Part II. Reactions of potassium atoms with pairs of ethyl iodide and each of bornyl, isobornyl, endo-norbornyl and exo-norbornyl chlorides

Abstract

The relative rate constants for the reactions of ethyl iodide and each of bornyl, isobornyl, endo-norbornyl and exo-norbornyl chlorides with potassium atoms have been obtained by analysing the solid potassium halides produced. The reactions were carried out over the ranges of temperature indicated and the following activation energy differences, ratios of A-factors, and relative rate constants were obtained: [graphic omitted] The results are considered in terms of the stereochemistry of the bicyclic compounds.
