Chromium(II) chemistry. Part VI. Magnetic and spectroscopic studies of diethylenetriamine complexes

Abstract

The chromium(II) complexes of diethylenetriamine (dien), Cr dien2X2, where X = Cl, Br, or I, have been shown to be high-spin and, from their diffuse reflectance spectra which are almost identical with those of tris(ethylenediamine)chromium(II) complexes, to have distorted octahedral structures. In solution in dimethylformamide, where the ethylenediamine complexes lose a ligand molecule, both dien molecules remain co-ordinated. The solution and solid-state spectra of the dien complexes are almost identical.

From their antiferromagnetism and spectra the monoamine complexes Cr dien X2 are considered to have halide-bridged, binuclear structures with the dien molecules co-ordinated in a plane at right angles to the main distortion axis.
