Radiation chemistry of liquid methylamine

Abstract

Liquid methylamine is decomposed by γ-rays to give hydrogen, methane, ethylenediamine, and azomethane with yields of 5·4, 0·18, 3·4, and 0·7 molecules per 100 eV respectively. The effects of solutes sodium nitrate, silver perchlorate, chloroform, propene, benzene, naphthalene, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, and nitrous oxide on the yield of hydrogen are interpreted in terms of scavenging of esol and/or H atoms. On the basis of an assumed mechanism the data give Ge(sol)= 3·2 ± 0·2 and GH= 1·6 ± 0·3.
