Complexes of mercury. Part V. X-Ray analysis of dichlorobisphenoxathiinmercury

Abstract

Dichlorobisphenoxathiinmercury crystallises in the monoclinic system, space group B2/b, with four units of C24H16Cl2HgS2O2 in a cell of dimensions a= 31·00, b= 19·46, c= 3·95 Å, γ= 111° 18′. The mercury atom is situated on a crystallographic centre of symmetry, and discrete linear HgCl2 molecules with an Hg–Cl distance of 2·33 Å are linked together in a chain by Cl→Hg bridging bonds of length 3·08 Å. A distorted octahedral co-ordination around the mercury atom is completed by two sulphur atoms of phenoxathiin molecules with Hg–S 3·12 Å, a distance much larger than normal. The phenoxathiin molecule is folded along the O–S axis, with a dihedral angle of 153°.
