Thermal diffusion factors and heats of transfer in benzene–methanol and benzene–ethanol mixtures at 25°
Abstract
Thermal diffusion in benzene–methanol and benzene–ethanol solutions has been studied by use of an optical technique and a pure Soret effect cell designed to minimise convective re-mixing. Earlier results on the benzene–methanol system obtained by Tyrrell, Firth, and Zaman have been broadly confirmed. Heats of transfer have been calculated for both systems over a concentration range from 0·1 to 0·9 mole fraction. The results are consistent with the observed thermodynamic excess functions for these mixtures, and confirm that hydrogen bonds in ethanol are more readily broken by the addition of benzene than are those in methanol.
