Crystal and molecular structure of trichlorobis(trimethylamine)vanadium(III)

Abstract

The crystal and molecular structure of trichlorobis(trimethylamine)vanadium(III), VCl3(NMe3)2, has been determined by single-crystal X-ray techniques and has been refined to R 7·4%. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a= 9·817(20), b= 10·127(14), c= 13·152(14)Å, and Z= 4. The co-ordination polyhedron surrounding the vanadium is a trigonal bipyramid, slightly distorted from idealised D3h symmetry. The two independent vanadium–chlorine bond-lengths are equal within experimental error and their mean is 2·239(4)Å. The vanadium atom lies in the plane with the chlorine atoms, and the Cl–V–Cl angles are 121·0(0·1)°(two values) and 118·1(0·2)°.
