ω-Nitroacetophenone as a chelating agent. Part II. Complexes with cobalt(II) and nickel(II)

Abstract

The synthesis and properties of bis-(ω-nitroacetophenonato)cobalt(II) and of its adducts with water, ethanol, and pyridine, are reported. Molecular-weight determinations, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and visible spectra indicate that bis-(ω-nitroacetophenonato)cobalt(II) is tetrameric both in solution of non-co-ordinating solvents and in the solid state. The magnetic properties of bis-(ω-nitroacetophenonato)nickel(II) further support the existence of a trimeric species also in the solid state (as postulated previously). An octahedral stereochemistry is deduced for the cobalt and nickel adducts on the basis of the experimental data.
