Studies of chromium(III) mercaptides

Abstract

The detailed i.r. and electronic spectra of a series of polymeric chromium(III) mercaptides are reported. Studies of magnetic susceptibilities and X-ray powder photographs suggest a layer lattice structure for chromium(III) methylsulphide; the magnetic behaviour of the finely powdered sample at low temperature is such as to suggest ferrimagnetic behaviour. Application of a 5-constant Urey–Bradley force field to CrIII(SMe)3 gives excellent agreement with observed i.r. and Raman frequencies.
