Unstable intermediates. Part LX. HO2 radical in γ-irradiated strontium chloride hexahydrate

Abstract

γ-Irradiation of SrCl2,6H2O at 77°K results in the formation of a radical having e.s.r. parameters expected for HO2. The values of the proton hyperfine coupling along the g-tensor axes are Ax=(–)12·7, Ay=(–)6 ± 1, and Az=(–)17·2 gauss. These results are discussed in terms of a model in which the radical is compared with the hydroxyl radical. A reasonable fit is obtained for a bond angle of about 108° and a spin density of about 0·35 on the central oxygen atom.
