Reactions of trichlorosilyl radicals with n-propyl chloride, cyclopentyl chloride, and carbon tetrachloride

Abstract

Alkyl halides were photolysed in the presence of excess of trichlorosilane. A chain reaction is initiated, and the rate-determining step is the abstraction of halogen atoms from the halides by the trichlorosilyl radical. Relative rates of abstraction of chlorine atoms from n-propyl chloride, cyclopentyl chloride, and carbon tetrachloride were obtained by competitive experiments. The following Arrhenius parameters were obtained. [graphic omitted]
