Proton magnetic resonance spectra of some aqueous molten salts

Abstract

1 H Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra are reported for the following series of non-stoicheiometric salt hydrates; Zn(NO3)2,xH2O (x= 6·3, 6·0, and 3·5); Mg(NO3)2,xH2O (x= 6·2 and 3·1); Mg(ClO3)2,xH2O (x= 6·0, 5·5, and 4·5); Mg(OAc)2,4H2O, Ca(NO3)2,4H2O, and the mixture Mg(NO3)2,Zn(NO3)2,7·7H2O. The spectra were obtained from samples held at 95°, at which temperature they were all liquids. The chemical shifts of the water proton signals are shown to vary with the nature of both the cation and the anion, as well as with the number of water molecules present, and are analysed in terms of the disordered lattice structure of these aqueous melts.
