Unstable intermediates. Part LVIII. An electron spin resonance study of γ-irradiated group IIA chloride hydrates

Abstract

A variety of radicals have been identified by e.s.r. in γ-irradiated hydrates of Group IIA chlorides. These include a Cl2 centre in SrCl2,6H2O which is notable in having two inequivalent chlorine atoms (A= 109·1 G for Cla and 94·9 G for Clb), and a centre thought to be ClOH in BaCl2,2H2O, which is isostructural with the VK-centres. Trends in the hyperfine parameters for these and related centres are discussed in terms of the electronegativities of their constituent atoms.
