Thermodynamic behaviour of silver chloride in formamide

Abstract

The solubility of silver chloride in dilute solutions of sodium chloride in formamide has been measured at 15 and 25°C, using a radiochemical technique. The solubility product and the equilibrium constant for the formation of undissociated silver chloride have been evaluated at each temperature. The heat of precipitation of silver chloride in formamide has been determined calorimetrically, and is in satisfactory agreement with the value calculated from the temperature dependence of the solubility product.

The cell Pt, H2/HCl in formamide/AgCl(s)/Ag has been studied at 5, 15 and 25°C and the standard potential of the silver/silver chloride electrode evaluated at each temperature. The results have been used to evaluate the standard potential of the silver electrode in formamide.
