Rayleigh ratios of pure liquids; comparison of experiment with theory

Abstract

Rayleigh ratios and depolarizations have been measured at 25° for methanol, water, ethanol, n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride and benzene at two wavelengths (4358 and 5461 Å) and values of the isotropic Rayleigh ratio compared with (a) similar data in the literature, (b) values calculated using the Einstein equation with published (∂n/∂p)T or (∂n/∂T)p data, and (c) values calculated from various theoretical or empirical expressions for (ρ∂ε/∂ρ)T. Best overall agreement is found using the Eykman equation.
