The absolute configuration of αα′-diphenylsuccinic acid. The (±)-and meso-αα′-diphenylsuccinic anhydrides

Abstract

(+)-αα′-Diphenylsuccinic acid has been converted into (S)–(+)-2,3-diphenylpropanol and thus shown to have the (S)-configuration. The (±)- and meso-anhydrides of αα′-diphenylsuccinic acid have been prepared, the latter in a pure state for the first time, and both have been characterised by their i.r. and n.m.r. spectra.
