2,2,2-Triphenyl-1,2-oxaphosph(V)olan: a novel Wittig reagent

Abstract

2,2,2-Triphenyl-1,2-oxaphosph(V)olan has been shown to act as a Wittig reagent with three aldehydes and one ketone to give γδ-unsaturated alcohols, in ca. 1 : 1 cistrans ratios, and triphenylphosphine oxide. The unsaturated alcohols were hydrogenated to the corresponding saturated compounds. The n.m.r. spectra of all the alcohols are given. The mass spectrum of the oxaphosph(V)olan and its reaction with water are discussed.
