The reaction of Grignard reagents with 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrophenalene-1,3-dione: addition and ring-opening reactions

Abstract

The reaction of 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrophenalene-1,3-dione with methylmagnesium iodide, benzylmagnesium chloride, allylmagnesium chloride, and phenylethynylmagnesium iodide, under various conditions, has been examined and the products characterised.

Fission of the alicyclic ring was observed with methylmagnesium iodide: this reaction cannot involve a cyclic chelated intermediate complex.
