Synthesis of derivatives of benzene-1,2,3,5-tetrol

Abstract

1,3-Di-O-substituted derivatives of benzene-1,2,3,5-tetrol were prepared from 2-nitrophloroglucinol-1,3-dibenzenesulphonate, or other 1,3-di-O-substituted derivatives of 2-nitropholoroglucinol and 5-nitropyrogallol. The p-nitrophenols were reduced to the corresponding amines which were then oxidised by an improved method to the p-benzoquinones; these on reduction gave the products. The 1,3- and 2,5-dimethyl ethers, the 2,3,5-trimethyl ether, and the tetramethyl ether of the tetrol have also been prepared.
