17β-Hydroxy-8-azaoestr-4-en-3-one(8-aza-19-nortestosterone), a range of 17α-substituted derivatives, and the corresponding 13β-ethyl- and propyl-gon-4-en-3-ones have been synthesised from the appropriate oestra-1,3,5(10)-trienes. Differences in chemical reactivity and in biological activity between these compounds and their intermediates and the corresponding carbocyclic compounds are briefly discussed.
