The nitration of 3-methoxyfluoranthene

Abstract

The nitration of 3-methoxyfluoranthene yields 3-methoxy-2- and -8-nitrofluoranthene, each of which on further nitration gives 3-methoxy-2,8-dinitrofluoranthene. 3-Methoxy-8- and -9-nitrofluoranthene and 3-methoxy-2,9-dinitrofluoranthene have been synthesised. 3-Toluene-p-sulphonyloxy- and 3-acetoxy-fluoranthene undergo nitration in the 8-position. New methods are given for the preparation of 2-methoxy-7-nitrofluorene and 3-nitrofluorene.
