Schiff bases. Part III. Amine and ketone exchange reactions with Schiff bases

Abstract

Certain ketimines of the type R12 C[double bond, length half m-dash]N–CHR22 undergo amine exchange when heated with diphenylmethylamine to give the ketimines R12C[double bond, length half m-dash]N–CHPh2, which rearrange to the tautomers R12CH–N[double bond, length half m-dash]CPh2. These undergo a second amine exchange with the production of N-(diphenylmethylene)diphenylmethylamine. The same compound is obtained from the ketone exchange reaction of the ketimines R12C[double bond, length half m-dash]N–CHPh2 with benzophenone.
