The mass spectrometry of dimedone and anhydrodimedone derivatives of some aldehydes

Abstract

The mass spectra of the dimedone derivatives of the C1—C4 aliphatic aldehydes, benzaldehyde, and o-methoxybenzaldehyde have been examined. Apart from the characteristic fragmentations of simple cyclohexane-1,3-diones, ions corresponding to the loss of a molecule of dimedone from the molecular ion and to the molecular ion of dimedone are observed. The anhydrodimedone derivatives of acetaldehyde and o-methoxybenzaldehyde have been examined; their fragmentation patterns are quite different from those of the parent dimedones.
