A reaction of nitrosobenzenes with aralkyl amines

Abstract

Nitrosobenzene and certain analogues react with primary or secondary aralkyl amines to yield an aldehyde or ketone derived from the amine, with concomitant reduction of the nitroso-compound to the corresponding azoxybenzene. Aralkyl amines with no hydrogen on the carbon adjacent to the amino-group apparently did not react. Reaction of a primary aliphatic amine with nitrosobenzene led to anomalous results.
