Iron carbonyl complexes from Schiff bases

Abstract

Schiff bases of aromatic aldehydes and ketones react with enneacarbonyldi-iron with substitution of iron into the ortho position of the aromatic ring. The structural features necessary to form the complexes are discussed and the degradation of these complexes to amines and to phthalimidines is described. The utility of mass spectrometry in determining the primary structural arrangements of these complexes is demonstrated.
