The conformation of hexamethylcyclohexane-1,3,5-trione as a solute in benzene or carbon tetrachloride

Abstract

Hexamethylcyclohexane-1,3,5-trione in benzene or carbon tetrachloride shows total polarisations in agreement with the measurements by Dale in benzene. Dielectric loss indications are that the trione has a near-zero permanent resultant moment. N.m.r. spectra display only one sharp methyl-proton signal. Observed Molar Kerr constants are small, the value in benzene being slightly negative. Details are reconcilable with the trione existing in a flexible non-polar conformation possessing an unusually high vibration polarisation.
