Steric requirements of sp2-hybridised lone electron pairs. Part II. The conformations of 2-(pyridylmethylene)-benzofuran-3(2H)-ones

Abstract

Some 2-(pyridylmethylene)benzofuran-3(2H)-ones have been prepared and their dipole moments measured. Their conformations are discussed, and it is concluded that the steric requirements of sp2-hybridised lone pairs and hydrogen atoms are similar in this situation, those of the lone pair probably being slightly the greater.
