Substitution at saturated carbon. Part I. Kinetics of the electrophilic substitution of tetraethyltin by mercuric iodide in solvent 96% methanol–4% water

Abstract

The substitution of tetraethyltin by mercuric iodide in solvent 96% methanol–4% water has been shown to proceed by the rate-determining bimolecular reaction, Et4Sn + Hgl2 EtHgl + Et3Snl. In a subsequent rapid reversible reaction, triethyltin iodide reacts with mercuric iodide in a 1 : 1 molar ratio. Rate coefficients for the rate-determining bimolecular reaction have been determined at 25° and at 40°, and the following activation parameters (at 298°K) calculated: ΔG 20·6 kcal. mole–1; ΔH 11·7 kcal. mole–1; ΔS–30 cal. deg.–1 mole–1.
