Acidity function calculations for iodic acid and nitric acid

Abstract

Values of the Hammett acidity function, H0, have been calculated for iodic acid and nitric acid using an equation previously derived from the hydration model for the proton suggested by Wyatt. The calculated H0 values are compared with the measured values in order to test the hydration hypothesis, and reasonable agreement is obtained. The effect upon the H0 values of complex anions of the type A,HA has been calculated, and while the effect is small the agreement between the calculated and measured H0 values is marginally better when this is included.
