Complex compounds of tervalent zirconium

Abstract

Zirconium(III) chloride, bromide, and iodide have been allowed to react with a range of mono- and bi-dentate nitrogen-donor ligands. The products isolated and characterised are: 2ZrX3,5MeCN; ZrX32py; 2ZrCl3,3L [L = bipy (2,2′-bipyridyl) and phen (1,10-phenanthroline); X = halogen], ZrBr32bipy and 2Zrl3,3bipy. The results of spectral, conductance, and magnetic susceptibility studies are discussed.

Attempts to isolate salts of the hexachlorozirconate(III) ion, [ZrCl6]3–, were unsuccessful.
