Bipyridyl complexes of tervalent titanium

Abstract

A number of 2,2′-bipyridyl complexes of titanium(III) bromide have been prepared and characterised, but 1,10-phenanthroline yielded only non-stoicheiometric products. From conductance and spectral data the complexes TiBr₃,bipy, 2TiBr₃,3bipy, and TiBr₃,2bipy have been assigned the respective structures (TiBr₃,bipy)₂, [TiBr₂(bipy)₂]⁺[TiBr₄(bipy)]^–, and [TiBr₂(bipy)₂]⁺Br^–. The latter complex forms strongly bonded solvates with one molecule of methyl cyanide or chloroform.

Further investigation of 2TiCl₃,3bipy suggests that it may have an ionic structure analogous to that of the bromo-complex.
