Infrared and laser-Raman spectra of WF5Cl are reported and assigned on the basis of C4v symmetry. A tungsten–chlorine bond distance of 2·10 Å is estimated from the P–R separation of ν1. This, and the high value of ν1, suggests the presence of some π-contribution to the W–Cl bond.
