The Raman spectra of some complex anions of formula [MX6]2– in the solid phase and in solution, where M = Se and Te; X = Cl, Br, and I

Abstract

Raman spectra of a range of salts containing anions of formula MX62– are reported. Samples were examined in a laser Raman spectrometer as solids and as solutions in acetonitrile and aqueous acids. In addition Raman spectra were recorded of solutions of selenium and tellurium dioxides dissolved in concentrated hydrohalogenic acids. Evidence is given for the formation of the pentaco-ordinated ion SeBr5 in solutions of SeO2 in concentrated HBr.
