The colour isomerism and structure of some copper co-ordination compounds. Part XV. The crystal structure of NN-ethylene-bis(acetylacetoneiminato)copper(II) hemihydrate

Abstract

A three-dimensional X-ray structural analysis of what was thought to be a second crystalline modification of NN′-ethylenebis(acetylacetoneiminato)copper(II) has disclosed that the compound should be formulated as the hemihydrate. The water molecules are not associated with the metal atoms as in the pentaco-ordinate aquo-complex but have essentially a space-filling function in which each is hydrogen-bonded to two different chelate molecules. The latter are nearly planar, except for the gauche conformation of the ethylene bridge, in contrast to the situation observed in the anhydrous compound.
