The vibrational spectrum of methyltetrachlorophosphorus(V)

Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectrum of MePCl4 in the solid state and in solution in non-ionising solvents is reported. The results suggest the formulation MePCl3+Cl in the solid state, while in non-ionising solvents the compound is monomeric with probable C2v symmetry. The solid-state infrared spectrum of the compound MePCl4,SbCl5 is recorded and compared with the corresponding spectrum in acetonitrile. The preparation of ButPCl4 is reported. Unfortunately this compound decomposed in non-ionising solvents so that steric effects of the t-butyl group could not be examined.
