Oxidation of acetic acid by manganese (III) salts

Abstract

Manganese autoxidations are often carried out in acetic acid solutions. It has been shown that acetic acid is oxidized to an electrophilic species under these conditions and a variety of products are produced from reaction of this species with various substrates. A study of the products arising from four classes of compounds has been carried out. Although this electrophilic species undoubtedly occurs in manganese autoxidations, it is unlikely that it enters directly into the normal autoxidation sequence.
