Radiation damage study of crystalline anthracene

Abstract

Damage to thin anthracene crystals by moderate α-particle bombardment may be arbitrarily classified into physical and chemical categories. Annealing damaged crystals restores only part of the physical damage; dissolving an irradiated crystal, with the resulting loss of the damaged lattice, reveals more. The chemical damage, however, remains even after solution of the crystal. Assessments of damage were made via scintillation efficiency decline.
