Adsorption of hydrocarbons on graphitized carbon

Abstract

Experimental results are reported for monolayer adsorption of ethylene, ethane, propylene, propane, isobutane and n-butane on homogeneous graphitized carbon. The data were reduced with a two-dimensional equation of state. Henry's constants, lateral interaction parameters, and heats and entropies of adsorption were calculated. The data indicate that for the larger hydrocarbons there is a decrease in rotational entropy of 2–4 cal/mole deg. due to hindered rotation on the surface. The data also provide evidence for the conclusion that at normal temperatures, hydrocarbons are adsorbed on graphitized carbon in a “lying-down” rather than in a “standing-on-end” position.
