A simple synthesis of methyl 4-deoxy-α-D-xylo-hexopyranoside (“methyl 4-deoxy-α-D-glucoside”) 2,3,6-triacetate

Abstract

Displacement of the methanesulphonyloxy-group from methyl 2,3,6-tri-O-benzoyl-4-O-methanesulphonyl-α-D-galactoside with thiocyanate ion gave the corresponding 4-thiocyanato-glucoside. This was readily converted into the title compound and the 4-thiol.
