The Friedel–Crafts acetylation of anthracene in nitrobenzene solution

Abstract

The recent results given by Bassilios et al. for the Friedel–Crafts acetylation of anthracene are shown to be suspect. In the standard method of preparation of 1-acetylanthracene, recommended by Kacer and Lüttringhaus, minor by-products comprise 2- and 9-acetylanthracenes, and three diacetylanthracenes.
