Studies in photochemistry. Part IV. The formation of 1- and 3-cyclohexylbenz[h]isoquinoline in the course of the photocyclodehydrogenation of 4-stilbazole to benz[h]isoquinoline in cyclohexane

Abstract

Photochemical cyclodehydrogenation of 4-stilbazole in cyclohexane solution formed, not only the expected benz[h]isoquinoline, but also 1- and 3-cyclohexylbenz[h]isoquinoline. Similarly, 4-styrylquinoline gave benzo[i]phenanthridine and some 5-cyclohexylbenzo[i]phenanthridine. The products were identified from their characteristic infrared, ultraviolet, proton magnetic resonance, and mass spectra.
