The action of nitrous acid on NNNN′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine

Abstract

The product from the reaction of nitrous acid with NNN′N′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine is N1N1N4-trimethyl-2-nitro-N4-nitroso-p-phenylenediamine, which is also produced by the action of nitrous acid on NNN′-trimethyl-p-phenylenediamine. Unambiguous syntheses of the two isomeric N-trimethyl-nitro-p-phenylenediamines and of NN′-tetramethyl-2-nitro- and NN′-dimethyl-2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine are described.
