Irradiation of phorone in methanolic solution gives, in addition to the two deconjugated isomers 2,6-dimethyl-hepta-1,5-dien-4-one and -1,6-dien-4-one, the cyclic photoproduct 5,6-dihydro-4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-2H-pyran, which is of a novel type. Mechanistic implications are discussed.
