The conversion of the enol-lactone (I) to 2-hydroxy-1,5-dimethylbicyclo[3,3,1]nonan-9-ones (II; R = H) and (III; R = H), by treatment with lithium hydridotri-t-butoxyaluminate, has been described in Part III of this Series. A more detailed examination of this type of transformation, with emphasis on the pathway of the reaction and the stereochemistry of the products, is described.
