Heterocyclic rearrangements. Part IX. The alkylation of benzofuroxans with formation of 1-hydroxybenzimidazole 3-oxides

Abstract

Methyl and benzyl trifluoromethanesulphonates have been found to react with benzofuroxan to give salts of 1-hydroxybenzimidazole 3-oxide and its 2-phenyl derivative, respectively. The 2-methyl derivative was prepared by a new, alternative, route. Similar reactions were observed with 4-methyl- and 5,6-dichloro-benzofuroxan. N.m.r. and ultraviolet spectra of the products are presented.
