Quantitative aspects of Lewis acidity. Part X. The basicity of ketones towards Lewis acids

Abstract

Equilibrium data are presented for 1:1 adduct formation between 4-methoxyacetophenone and 4,4′-dimethoxybenzophenone and various covalent metal halides in ether solution. The observed order of acidity towards both ketones is GaBr3∼ GalCl3 [graphic omitted] ZnBr2∼ ZnCl2 > BF3. It is suggested that hydrogen bonding plays a part in determining the stability of boron fluoride–acetophenone adducts.
