Molecular polarisability. The anisotropic polarisabilities of anthracene and several halogenated anthracenes

Abstract

Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (× 1012) are reported for anthracene (0 D, + 151·4), 9-chloroanthracene (1·36 D, + 181), 9-bromoanthracene (1·31 D, + 184), 9,10-dichloroanthracene (0 D, + 152, + 157), and 9,10-dibromoanthracene (0 D, + 168) as solutes. Anisotropic polarisabilities (b1= 24·02, b2= 36·09, b3= 16·13) for anthracene, deduced from data on anthracene, 9-chloroanthracene, and 9-bromoanthracene, are satisfactorily applicable to the two dihalogenoanthracenes.
